Condell, John S.

Condell immigrated to the United States in 1824. At the age of fifteen, John and his brother Thomas left Philadelphia and travelled to Illinois. They initially settled in Carrollton, where they entered into the mercantile business together. In 1840, they moved to Springfield, where they formed the mercantile firm Condell, Jones & Co. In 1844, Condell married Arabella Rice, and together they had five children. In 1864, Condell partnered with Abraham Lincoln's brother-in-law Clark M. Smith, to form C. M. Smith & Co., a large dry-goods, grocery, and drug store that flourished in downtown Springfield. In 1860, Condell owned $10,000 worth of real estate and $10,000 worth of personal property. Politically, Condell was a Whig and later a Republican. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
