Churchill Coffing, attorney, moved from Salisbury, Connecticut, to Peru, Illinois, as early as 1839. He married fellow Salisbury native Asenath C. Brewster in Illinois in 1841. Coffing purchased eighty acres of land in Lee County in 1842, and in 1848 and 1849 purchased several segments of land in La Salle County. In 1850, Coffing was practicing law and owned $10,000 in real property. Politically, Coffing was a Whig.
