Curran was a silversmith and jeweler who settled in Springfield, Illinois, in 1840. In 1844, he married Anastasia Spottswood. She died two years later, and he re-married in 1874. In 1850, Curran lived in the household of fellow Springfield Democrat Charles H. Lanphier. In 1853, President James Buchanan appointed Curran as the U.S. pension agent at Springfield; he held the office until 1858. By 1860, Curran owned $25,000 worth of real estate.
