Curtis married Phebe Moore, and they settled in Bloomington, Illinois. In 1850, he was a carpenter and joiner in Bloomington. In the 1850s, the family moved to Saint Anthony, Minnesota, near Minneapolis, where Curtis was the mayor of the town from 1858-1860, and was on the board of school directors. In 1860, Curtis was a real estate agent in Saint Anthony, where he owned $10,000 in real property, with a personal estate of $1,500.
