Frank F. Dana was a shoe dealer. Dana moved as a young man from his native Connecticut to Springfield, Illinois, where he found work as a shoe dealer. In October 1859, Dana married Julia W. Harrison, with whom he had two daughters. In 1860, he was working in as a shoe dealer in Springfield and had a personal estate of $150. He remained in Springfield until 1864, when he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, accepting employment at a general store in that city. A year later, he became a shoe clerk in a store in the main business district, a position he held for over twenty-five years.
