John Dredge was a chair maker and cabinetmaker in Peoria, Illinois. He married Aurelia Quimby in Fulton County, Illinois, on September 11, 1850, after his first wife, Barbara Anne Meyers died that year from childbirth. Dredge had three sons and one daughter with Barbara. Dredge supported the Whig Party. In 1860, he was living in Peoria's First Ward and owned $10,500 in real estate and had a personal estate of $13,500.
