Emmitt, Samuel

Samuel Emmitt was a court clerk, real estate investor, and farmer. He married a woman named Catherine most likely sometime around the year 1831, and eventually had at least two children with her. He served as clerk for the Logan County Circuit Court, from 1848 to 1856. As of September 1850, he owned real estate valued at $1,400. Between 1850 and 1853, he received warrants for over 1,000 acres of land in Logan County and another 160 acres in nearby Tazewell County, Illinois. In 1857, he ran for associate justice for Logan County, Illinois, but did not win the position. By 1860, his agricultural endeavors were very successful. He owned 600 acres of land in Logan County, worth $12,000, owned another $500 in machinery and farm equipment, livestock valued at $1,200, and raised wheat, rye, and corn. On July 1, 1866, he married Hester Edmonds. In 1868, just seven months before he died, he purchased another 640 acres of land in Logan County for $6,400.
