Emery lived in Fulton County, Illinois, by 1837. He was first married to Olive Jacobs, with whom he had eleven children. After Olive's death in 1859, he married Hannah Gaffney. Emery purchased land in Henry County in 1852, near the town of Galva, where he farmed for the rest of his life. In 1860, he owned $15,000 worth of real estate.
