After attending college and seminary in his native Pennsylvania, in 1834 Galt was licensed as a Presbyterian preacher. That year, he married Sarah Happer and by the fall of 1835 they had settled in Springfield, Illinois, where Galt became the preacher of the Farmington Presbyterian Church. Sarah Galt died in 1849, and Thomas remarried to Margaret Moore.
