In 1836, Grubb moved with his parents and siblings to Illinois, settling first in Madison County and two years later, in Springfield. In 1850, he married Sarah A. Constant, with whom he had six children. Grubb was a carpenter and bridge builder, and he and his family resided in Springfield. In 1860, he owned $1,300 worth of real estate and his household included a servant and another carpenter who may have been his employee.
