Grubb married Ann Rogers in Pennsylvania, and they had six children there before moving to Illinois in 1836. He settled in Springfield in 1838 and was employed as a bridge builder throughout central Illinois. In 1850, he owned $750 in real property and lived in Springfield with his wife and four children, three of whom were young men employed in carpentry and bridge-building.
