Julius N. Granger married Sarah Arnold Douglas, sister of Stephen A. Douglas, on February 14, 1830. The couple had three children, Adelaide, Emma, and Eugene. Gehazi Granger, Julius' father, later married Sarah Douglas' mother, also named Sarah.
Granger became postmaster for the U.S. Post Office in his hometown of Manchester, New York, on April 1, 1847, and held the position until June 1849. In 1857, President James Buchanan appointed him register of the U.S. General Land Office in Washington, DC, a position he held for about thirty years. In 1860, Granger noted his occupation as a farmer and owned $20,000 in a personal estate.
