William A. Herron settled in Peoria, Illinois in November 1839, and for thirty-four years served as president of the Peoria Savings Bank. He was one of the first trustees of the Second Presbyterian Church in Peoria as well as the treasurer of the Peoria County Bible Society. Herron married Susan Bartlett on March 3, 1846 in Peoria County. In 1853, the Peoria Gas-Light and Coke Company received a charter, and Herron later became its president. Herron supported the Whig Party. Susan died in 1882, and on November 4, 1884, Herron married Mary Walker. The couple had two sons and one daughter.
