As early as 1836, Hinman lived in what is now Schuyler County, Illinois, where he made his living as an attorney. In 1843, he married Grace A. Kingsberry in Morgan County, and they settled in Rushville. In 1860, he owned $6,000 worth of real estate and $10,000 worth of personal property.
