Hill was a physician, but while he lived in Springfield, Illinois, he operated mercantile and drug stores. A Whig, Hill was elected mayor of Springfield in 1843, but he resigned the same year. In 1841 and 1842, Hill retained Logan & Lincoln at least four times to represent him in court. Sometime after 1843, he moved to Chickasaw County, Mississippi, where in 1850 he was a hotel-keeper. By 1860, he was practicing as a physician and also likely owned a farm. He had accumulated $2,250 worth of real estate and claimed $14,610 in personal property. He owned six enslaved people in 1860.
