Son of William H. Hodge, Andrew J. Hodge was living in McLean County, Illinois, when the Mexican War began. On June 13, 1846, Andrew volunteered for military service, enrolling as a private in Company B of the Fourth Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. He died as the Fourth Regiment was en route to the war zone along the Rio Grande.
