Jenkins, Timothy

Timothy Jenkins pursued an academic course and studied law. He earned admittance to the bar in 1825 and started a practice in Oneida Castle, New York. In 1832, Jenkins moved to Vernon, New York. From 1838 to 1845, he served as the attorney for the Oneida Indians in their case against the State of New York. Jenkins worked as district attorney for Oneida County, from 1840 to 1845. In 1844, he won election, as a Democrat, to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1845-49. Jenkins served alongside Abraham Lincoln during the Thirtieth Congress. Failing in his bid for reelection in 1848, he later returned to Congress in 1851, serving to 1853. Jenkins attended the Republican National Convention in 1856 and was thereafter a Republican.
