In 1830, Kane's family moved to Indiana, and he grew up there. As a young man, he moved to Indianapolis, where he learned carpentry. In July 1839, he moved to Springfield, Illinois. In 1842, he was ordained a minister in the Christian Church, and at that point preaching became his primary occupation for the remainder of his life. In 1847, he married Caroline M. Beers, with whom he had ten children. Kane was a Whig and later a Republican.
