Kinney, Thomas J.

Thomas J. Kinney was a retail clerk, public servant, court clerk, military officer, and merchant. In July 1849, he married Ann A. Dilworth. They had at least four children together, two of whom died before reaching adulthood. By 1850, Kinney owned $500 in real estate and worked as a merchant's clerk in Schuyler County, Illinois. He served on the board of supervisors for Schuyler County from 1856 to 1858. By 1860, he worked as a merchant and owned $5,600 in real and personal property. Later that year, he began serving as clerk for the Schuyler County Circuit Court. In September 1862, he mustered into the 119th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry at the rank of colonel. He served for three years, was breveted to brigadier general in March 1865, and mustered out in August 1865.
