James W. Knox was a merchant and nephew of James Knox. He spent his early life in his hometown of Canajoharie, New York. In 1844, Knox moved from New York to Knoxville, Illinois, to join his uncle in a mercantile business. In 1850, he was residing with his uncle and engaged in the mercantile trade. In March 1854, James W. married Elizabeth Johnson in Peoria County. He died unexpectedly from typhoid fever.
