Lowry moved to Illinois when he was a boy and he grew up in Springfield. He was a partner in the firm Lowry, Lamb & Company, until its dissolution. At the time of his death, he was the clerk of the U.S. Circuit Court for the Southern District of Illinois. He was married with three children.
