Long was an early resident of Clinton County, Illinois who held numerous county positions in the 1830s and 1840s. He served as sheriff from 1836 to 1838, and from 1844 to 1847, he was county treasurer and assessor. From 1847 to 1849, he was county clerk. In November 1850, Clinton County voters elected him sheriff and collector, but he died a month after assuming office.
