Richmond Lucas moved with his parents from his native state to McLean County, Illinois, in 1826. When his father and mother died in 1839 and 1840, respectively, Richmond, the eldest, became guardian of the youngest of his nine siblings and owner of his father's 320 acres of land. In 1850, Lucas was a farmer and he owned $5,000 worth of real estate. In 1856, he moved his family to Bloomington, Illinois. where he engaged in business as a merchant.
