William A. Mallory was a physician, publisher, and preacher. Mallory moved from his native Kentucky to Springfield, Illinois, at a young age. He began teaching at age nineteen while he simultaneously started reading medicine under Dr. John Todd. He then continued his studies at Louisville Medical College and the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical College. In 1848, Mallory married Susan A. Johnson in Denmark, Iowa, and the couple had three children. Dr. Mallory began practicing medicine in Springfield in 1849 before expanding to a publishing career with the Christian Sentinel in 1852. Eureka College purchased that newspaper in 1856, and that same year Mallory joined the Illinois State Christian Association, preaching and teaching until the outbreak of the American Civil War. He briefly served as a recruitment officer and captain of Company C, 114th Illinois Infantry, in 1862 and 1863 before resuming his medical practice and preaching.
