William Marsh received his early education at a private school and Groton Academy in his native state, before matriculating to Union College. Graduating in 1842, Marsh commenced the study of law under Judge Freeborn Jewett in Skaneateles, New York, and ex-President Millard Fillmore in Buffalo, before passing the bar in 1845. He then opened a law office in Ithaca, where he remained until removing to Quincy, Illinois, in 1854. In 1860, Marsh was living in Quincy’s First Ward and owned $6,00 in real property, with a personal estate of $1,000. In Quincy, Marsh had a law firm and worked with Judge Onias C. Skinner. In addition to his law practice, he owned stock in the First National Bank and the Quincy Gas Company, and he served as president of Barlow Corn Planter Company.
In 1848, Marsh married Cornelia M. Woods in New York and in 1880 the couple had three children.
