By 1834, McElhiney had settled in McLean County, Illinois, and entered the carpentry business. On September 12, 1835, he married Sophronia Baker in McLean County. In 1850, McElhiney was living with his wife and five children in Bloomington, Illinois, where he was employed as a carpenter and owned $700 in real estate. From 1854-58, he was the postmaster of Bloomington, where he lived for the rest of his life. In 1860, he owned $4,000 worth of real estate.
