McCandless, John B.

John B. McCandless was a bookbinder, election judge, and Presbyterian. Sometime before 1841, he married Catharine A., with whom he eventually had at least seven children. After moving to Springfield, Illinois, he worked for a time with partners William T. Bradford and J. M. Johnston on the west side of the city square. In March 1859, the Springfield city council nominated and elected him election judge and he was reelected in March 1860. He was a man of modest means, owning a personal estate valued at $100 and real estate valued at $1,000 by 1860. One of his daughters died in June 1860, and his wife passed away in February 1865. McCandless died of paralysis after a fall.
