When Peoria became incorporated in 1835, McClallen was elected as a trustee. In 1850, McClallen and his wife Rhoda were living in Peoria where he was employed as a merchant and owned $5,000 in real property. By 1860, McClallen was living in Peoria's Third Ward and had amassed $60,000 in real property, with a personal estate valued at $15,000. He supported the Whig party and in 1863 was the president of City Insurance Company in Peoria.
