Born about seventy-five miles from Montreal, Merriman was educated in Canada and taught school for a short time. In November 1839, he settled in Bloomington, Illinois, where he found work as a shop clerk. In 1842, he purchased the business and made his living as a merchant. On November 1, 1842, he married Clara Bullock, and the couple had four children. A Republican, Merriman served as a county commissioner, a McLean County judge, and as the mayor of Bloomington.
