Robert T. Miller was a farmer, druggist, and public servant. He worked his family's farm in Lake Township in Ashland County, Ohio prior to moving to Urbana, Illinois. By the late-1850s, he was a partner in the Urbana-based pharmaceutical firm Jaquith & Miller. By 1860, he owned $1,000 in real property. Voters in Champaign County elected him county treasurer in 1861 and re-elected him in 1863.
