Born in Dumbarton, Vermont, Charles J. Miller was a teacher, physician, and a Presbyterian. Prior to relocating to Illinois, he attended Yale College with the intention of becoming a minister, then lived in Ohio for a time. He moved to Mount Carmel, Illinois, in 1840, where he worked as a high school teacher for several years before he began studying medicine under local physician Jacob Lescher. Shortly after Miller began practicing medicine, he moved to Friendsville in Wabash County, Illinois, where he remained for some time. He eventually returned to Mount Carmel and partnered with Jacob Lescher's son, Dr. John J. Lescher. Miller practiced medicine alongside the latter until his death. In January 1848, he married Elvina Lescher. They had seven children together, four of whom died in infancy. In 1850, he owned $300 in real estate.
