Nance is the son of Zachariah Nance. In 1829, Nance lived in Morgan County. By 1832, he lived in a part of Sangamon County, Illinois, that would later become Menard County, and he lived there until at least 1840. In 1850, he lived in Schuyler County and worked as a carpenter. In 1860, he lived in Grundy County, where he was a farmer.
