By May 1839, Edward B. Pease and his brother William had established a hardware and cutlery store in Springfield, Illinois, called "E. B. Pease & Bro." After William's death in 1859, the company was dissolved, and Edward carried on the business in his own name. In 1860, Pease owned $17,000 worth of real estate and $10,000 worth of personal property, and his household included a domestic servant.
