Polk lived in Mercer County, Illinois, in 1835, when he purchased federal land in Sangamon County. By 1838, he had established a home in the Spring Creek area of Sangamon County, west of Springfield. Polk was active in Whig politics. He was also active in the county agricultural society and published a monthly newspaper entitled The Illinois Farmer and Journal of Agriculture. Susan, Polk's wife and the mother of their five children, died in 1848; Polk died the following year.
