Mortimer Porter was an attorney. In September 1841, he married Mary Ann Woodruff. By 1850, they had four children and he owned $15,000 in real estate. In 1851, he joined the firm Sandford, Porter & Striker in partnership with Edward Sandford, James S. Sandford, and Garrit H. Striker, Jr. By 1860, his real estate holdings had increased to $45,000 in value and he owned personal property worth an additional $6,000.
