Procter purchased federal land in McLean County, Illinois, in 1837 and he lived there soon afterward. In 1849, he married Mary Jane Story , and they settled in Mount Hope. Procter practiced as a physician in McLean County until around 1858, when he moved to Caldwell County, Missouri. In Missouri, Procter worked as a farmer. Politically, he was a Whig and later a Republican.
