In 1849, Robinson left Bloomington, Illinois with a large group to seek his fortune in California. He returned to Illinois and married Barbara C. Mennert on June 2, 1852 in Tazewell County. In 1860, he was a clerk in Bloomington. He served the Union in the Civil War as a captain in the 33rd Illinois Infantry from August 1861 to January 1862 and as a lieutenant colonel in the 62nd Illinois Infantry from April 1862 to June 1863.
