Root graduated from Dartmouth College and taught school before being admitted to practice law in New York. He represented the state as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1803-1805, 1809-1811, and 1815-1817; and as a Jacksonian from 1831-1833. In addition to serving many terms in the New York State Assembly, he was also lieutenant governor of the state from 1822 to 1824.
