Sanderson, John P.

Sanderson began practicing law in 1839. He was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1845 and to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1847. Sanderson was the editor of the Philadelphia Daily News from 1848 to 1856. In March 1861, he was appointed chief clerk of the U.S. War Department, and in July 1863 he was commissioned colonel of the Thirteenth U.S. Infantry. In February 1864, he was appointed provost marshal general of the department of Missouri.
