Matthew (Mathew) T. Scott, a successful businessman and father of Matthew T. Scott, Jr., left his native Pennsylvania at a young age to reside in Kentucky, settling in Lexington in 1810. He spent his career in banking, more than forty years, rising to president of the Northern Bank by the time of his death.

Scott married Winny Webb in 1810 in Bourbon County, Kentucky, and the couple had a large family of sixteen children.
