Hampton P. Sloan was a farmer, military officer, and public servant. In January 1848, while still living in Ohio, he married Adaline Emily Grand Girard. They had at least four children together, one of whom—a son—died in 1854. Sloan became president of the Winnebago Agricultural Society in Winnebago County, Illinois in February 1855. In 1856 he also served as a township supervisor in the county. In September of that year Adaline died. Just over a year later, in October 1857, he married Delia Grippen. By 1860, he was still farming in Winnebago County and owned nearly $5,000 in real and personal property. During the Civil War, he served at the rank of captain in Company C of the Seventy-Fourth Illinois Infantry. He received his commission in September 1862, and resigned from service April 25, 1863. He died in Ramona, California.
