Smith was born on Long Island and in 1820, he moved with his father to Monroe County, Illinois. In 1831, he visited family members in the Loami area of western Sangamon County, and by 1836 he had settled there. In 1839, he married Charlotte Colburn, with whom he had six children. Smith constructed and operated several mills in conjunction with his in-laws Ebenezer and William Colburn, including the first mill in the Loami area.
