Stickney, John C.

John C. Stickney was a prominent citizen of Shawneetown, Illinois. Stickney operated the firm of J.C. Stickney & Company in partnership with J. Stickney. In February 1840, Governor Thomas Ford nominated Stickney as a director of the Bank of Illinois, but the Illinois Senate tabled his nomination. In 1841, Stickney brought suit against the president, cashier, and directors of the bank in the Sangamon County Circuit Court, demanding that they show by what authority they exercised the operation of a banking corporation. In May 1842, he filed a petition to be declared bankrupt and to be discharged from his debts.
