Daniel, a son of Robert Sweet, grew up in New York, where he married Elcey Sweet. They accompanied Daniel's family to the Loami area of western Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1837. Elcey died in 1849. In 1850, Daniel lived in the household of his brother Jonathan in Winchester, Illinois, where they were brickmakers.
