Watson moved to Springfield, Illinois, with his parents in 1825. In 1833, he married Mary Ridgeway, with whom he had five children. In 1847, he moved to the Oregon Territory, where he was a farmer and stock raiser with $15,000 in real estate and $4,000 in personal property in 1860.
