Samuel L. Whipple was a doctor, college agent, and philanthropist. Born in Windham County, Connecticut, Whipple married Clarissa Verry in November 1829. In 1850, Whipple was practicing medicine and living in McLean County, Illinois, and owned real property valued at $2,000. In 1860, Whipple was working as an agent for Illinois College. He also served as treasurer of the college. Whipple is best known for donating $10,000 to start Whipple Academy. This institution, founded in 1869 and named after Whipple due to his donation, was located within the modern boundries of Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois, and was created to prepare students for admission into Illinois College. At the time of his death, his property was worth over $10,000.
