After entering the wholesale grocery business in Massachusetts and St. Louis, Willard moved in 1844 to Woodford County, Illinois, where he opened several stores in different towns, including one in Metamora, where he settled. On April 4, 1844, he married Elizabeth Osgood Goodrich, with whom he had four children. In 1856, Willard moved to Chicago, where he prospered as a wholesale grocer and grain dealer.
