Robert B. M. Wilson, a physician, ran for the Illinois House of Representatives in Tazewell County in 1858 as a Democrat, defeating Republican Richard N. Cullom. Tazewell County constituted the Thirty-Ninth Illinois House District. Wilson also represented Tazewell County at the State Constitutional Convention of 1862 in Springfield.

Wilson married Jane Frances Anthony in Tazewell County in June 1854. The couple had two sons. In 1860, Wilson owned real property valued at $23,700 and had a personal estate of $15,000.
