Wood moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, sometime before 1839, when he served as one of the founding members of the Springfield Mechanic's Union. In 1850, he was working as a tailor with his wife Eliza and seven children, and owned $800 in real estate. Ten years later, he was living in Decatur and working as a store clerk with $700 in real estate.
