Located on the Gulf of Mexico, 264 miles from Mexico City, Veracruz is a city in the State of Veracruz in East Mexico. Founded by Hernan Cortes in 1519, Veracruz became one of New Spain's (and later Mexico's) most prosperous port cities. During Abraham Lincoln's lifetime, Veracruz was the site of several foreign invasions, including Winfield Scott's Mexican War campaign.
