Founded by Hernán Cortés in 1519, Veracruz became one of New Spain’s (and later Mexico’s) most prosperous port cities. During Abraham Lincoln’s lifetime, Veracruz was the site of several foreign invasions, including Winfield Scott’s Mexican War campaign.
